Accounts placed for collection or charge offs can stay on your credit file for 7 years. Even though a consumer has paid the debt, it may still show on your credit file as unpaid.
MCC can help you get these accounts updated to Paid in Full.
Collection companies can be very difficult to deal with. Not only do they neglect to report $0 balances once you have paid the debt but they also transfer your account from one collection agency to another. This is called "assigning a collection". It is important to know that when these accounts are placed in collection the reporting period should not be extended by assigning the account to another collection agency when it is sold.
A "charge off" is an account that is written off. If an account that was charged off is later paid in part or paid in full by the consumer, the 7-year period is not extended by this subsequent payment.
